Anti-flame

About this property

The flame-retardant property is the belt’s ability to extinguish a flame and how easily the flame reappears once extinguished.

At esbelt®, depending on the belt’s application, the flammability test is carried out according to the ISO 340 or ASTM D378 standard.

Our belts with the flame-retardant property are mostly used in the airport, distribution and logistics, and refined sugar sectors.

Regulation

ISO 340

ISO 340 is an international flame-retardant standard. This flammability test is carried out according to the ISO 340 Conveyor belts Flame retardation Specifications and test method standard, in the external Applus laboratory, a member of the EGOLF European Group of Official Laboratories for FIRE Testing.

To proceed with the test, ISO 340 requires 6 samples of the belt to be tested. The flame is applied to 3 samples in the warp direction and 3 in the weft direction. Once the flame is removed from the samples, it must extinguish within 15 seconds for each of the samples, and the total time it takes for the flame to self-extinguish in all 6 samples must be less than 45 seconds. The flame should not reappear when a stream of air is applied.

ASTM D378

ASTM D378 is the flame-retardant standard applied to conveyor belts used in many airports in the United States of America. The method used to verify compliance with this standard is described in Article 30 of the «Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)» of the United States Department of Labor.

In summary, 4 samples are taken from the belt, 2 in the warp direction and 2 in the weft direction, and are exposed separately to a flame. Once the flame is removed, in order to certify that the belt is flame-retardant according to ASTM D378, the average flame extinguishing time must be less than or equal to 1 minute. The incandescence cannot exceed an average of 3 minutes after the flame is removed.
